Cooking with Chinese Medicine herbs can easily be as simple as adding a few palatable herbs to chicken stock. 
For my first go I used (clockwise from top): Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berries), Shan Yao (Chinese Yam), Dang Shen (Codonopsis root), Da Zao (Chinese Red Date), Chen Pi (Aged tangerine peel). 
These beauties are great for energy (hello productivity), blood (see ya anaemia), and digestion (bye bye bloating).

I’ve been kinda resisting cooking with Chinese Medicine herbs, mainly because it seemed a bit too Chinese-y (said the girl studying Chinese Medicine). Is there no end to the awesome pumpkin soup flavour pairings? I couldn’t find sage at my local grocer so I threw caution to the wind and tried dill with my pumpkin soup - what a little winner! Topped the lot with burnt butter pine nuts and slices of medjool dates…the sweet and savoury addition was a stroke of pure genius. Served with pumpkin semi-sourdough rolls, my digestion is gonna love me!

Using components from last nights dessert made for a deeeelish breakfast this morning. Pears poached with ginger, lime and cinnamon (it’s a thing I have right now) with vanilla bean creme friache, toasted almonds, all topping the porridge. I used some@poaching water in making the porridge so the flavours Carey throughout the dish.

I’ve topped poached eggs with a bastardized salsa verde (hey, gotta get those greens in somehow) and finished the lot with bonito flakes. Hells yeah they’re good…. Braising the best winter has to offer: cabbage and black kale (cavello nero). First, sauté sliced half moon leeks (also in season) with a knob of butter. Add finely sliced kale stalks. Once semi-soft (approx 5 minutes) add sliced cabbage (I’ve used wombok here) and the roughly chopped leaves from the kale. Add a slurp of veg stock and seasoning and cook until tender and liquid evaporated. 

Half will be used as a side for tonight’s dinner- topped with toasted pine nuts and preserved lemon. The other half will be mixed with beaten egg and smokey free range bacon and made into a slice (that’s a good #paleo dish if that’s your bent).

Morning all! Even though it’s more a summery flavour, I thought if share my Tahitian-inspired porridge. I cooked porridge with linseeds, 6 very fine slices of ginger, lime zest and juice. When cooked I stirred through coconut oil, and topped with toasted coconut mixed with dried mulberries (Sang Ji Shen) and cranberries. 
Actually it’s a bit Tahiti meets TCM. Ginger is great to warm and stimulate digestion, and helping to dry damp. I added mulberries, not only because they Tate like natures caremel, but they also boost blood, which had a great deal to do with boosting energy and warming up.

This is what happened to the ginger and lime poached pears and apples. They made for delicious topping on porridge with linseed, Barambah strawberry yoghurt, topped with maple roasted almonds. Gosh, breakfasts are good!
